Volunteering Opportunities

Conversation Volunteers

Please contact Mary Giles on 01872 246961 for details.
The Adult Speech and Language Therapy service co-ordinates its own successful volunteer scheme known as 'Conversation Partners'. We are always looking for volunteers to assist our patients in their home environment.
Unlock the laughter

We offer training, regular meetings, ongoing support, paid travel, social events and a lot of fun.

Previous volunteers have said how enjoyable it is to be involved in a worthwhile scheme which teaches them many new skills whilst actively helping others.

What Does a Conversation Partner Do?

The role of a volunteer includes:

  • Visit people with communication difficulties, including aphasia and dysarthria in their own homes within Cornwall. These visits will allow useful conversation using ideas and techniques introduced in therapy. We suggest a one hour visit per week with your conversation partner.
  • Help your conversation partner to take part in social and community activities if appropriate.
  • Keep a record of each visit and feedback to the therapist by email or post.
  • Attend support group meetings to share experiences with other conversation partners and swap ideas.
  • The average input with each partner is six months, but depending on your partner this may be shorter.

The benefits for the volunteer are:

  • Training
  • A system of support
  • Meeting new people and learning from others
  • Growing awareness of disability
  • Confidence in communication skills
  • Enjoyment, fun, contribution!
  • Valuable experience
