Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy (also known as the Integrated Therapy Service) 

The Rehabilitation Service is available for all adults over the age of 16, registered with a Cornish GP who:

  • have long term or chronic conditions
  • require rehabilitation following surgery or major trauma
  • have had a severe medical event such as a head injury
  • require therapy or equipment support to maintain independence
  • are terminally ill

Referrals for rehabilitation, home adaptation and/or equipment come from a range of health and social care professionals. People referred will be assessed by an appropriate therapist or team of workers who will recommend treatment and agree a goal orientated plan with the service user.

The rehabilitation service carries out home assessments, where appropriate, and modifications to the patient’s home or the provision of equipment can assist towards a faster recovery.

Rehabilitation comprises of either one or a range of the following

  • Facilitation of normal movement
  • Management of altered physical tone
  • Risk assessment management
  • Re-education of balance
  • Gait re-education
  • Muscle strengthening
  • Assessment of appropriate walking aids
  • Facilitation of mobility improvement to allow safe return to a home environment
  • Pain management
  • Postural seating management
  • Eating/feeding retraining
  • Assessment and training in personal care
  • Assessment and training in domestic, work and leisure skills
  • Selection and prescription of daily living equipment
  • Cognitive and Perceptual assessment
  • Anxiety/depression management and relaxation
  • Driving assessment
  • Education for specific conditions eg. Arthritis and education/support for carers.
  • Adaptation of the living environment
  • Assessment for wheelchairs
  • Prosthetic limbs.

The Team: 

The Rehabilitation Service is delivered by a team of qualified and registered professionals, comprising Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and support workers including Technical Instructors, Rehabilitation Technicians, Occupational Therapy Assistants and Technical Officers.
